In choir-stalls you may find misericords, i.e. ledges on the underside of the turn-up seats, against which choristers can lean and get some support while standing. They are often decorated with grotesque or amusing carvings.
A misericord can also be a small dagger – so called because after a medieval warrior had run an opponent through with a sword, he could show “misericordia” (pity or mercy) by using the dagger to finish the man off.
