The best I can do with an image like this is tell you that it's a view of the Roman Campagna at Tivoli, depicting the famous round Temple of the Sibyl. It's hard to tell the style from this, but it probably dates to the 18th century, when this part of Italy attracted the interest of many painters from all over Europe. The slightly loose handling and palette suggest a French origin, but many Italians and British painters were influenced by the French at this point. It could easily be a later copy of an 18th-century original.

The tondo (round) form is interesting. I'd say that this is likely to be a nice souvenir that someone obtained while on the Grand Tour in Italy. I wouldn't venture to suggest a specific painter without seeing the work in the flesh, so to speak.

This 17th century painting is at the height of controversary over a missing body part. The original was once engraved by another artist in its mirror image. A second copy was made not long after, but inside another painting, that is, a painting within a painting. Both copies have this body part exposed, whilst the supposed original, in the London National Gallery doesn't, which has caused concerns that what they have is a fake. Which painting is it, who painted the original and what one other discrepancy appears between the copies and the 'original'?

"No montes un ____ !" said Precocious Pete's fussy baby brother's nanny. Pete thinks of the large painting of the dancer at the end of the Cloister in the museum with the stolen rare seascape Rembrandt. What is the large painting called and what does it mean in the context of the painting?

A few years ago, a painting attributed (somewhat dubiously) to a major Italian master was prevented from leaving the U.K. by a national campaign. Now, another painting, this time a portrait, by that artist is about to appear on the auction block. What is the work about to be sold, who painted it and whom does it depict, and what was that earlier work? An illustration of either painting would be welcomed.
