    The U.S. public debt, commonly called the national debt, gross federal debt or U.S. government debt, is the amount of money owed by the United States federal government. This does not include the money owed by states, corporations, or individuals. As of December 2005, the total U.S. government debt is approximately $8.1 trillion ($8,100,000,000,000, or in scientific notation $8.1×1012). Although it is an apparently gigantic figure, the debt to gross domestic product ratio is around 2:3 which is a median figure amongst many nations.
