Their debut album "Speak & Spell" was released 6th October 1981 (some sources give it as 5th October 1981).

It doesn't look like they released an album in 1980.

Their first recording was the song "Photographic", which was released on a compilation album in 1980:

Their first released track, 'Photographic', appeared on the 1980 compilation "Some Bizarre Album", which also contained the first outings of many other notable bands including Blancmange, Soft Cell and The The. However, Depeche Mode's own first album, Speak and Spell, was published by Mute Records in 1981, featuring the hit-single 'Just Can't Get Enough'.

According to the liner notes of Speak & Spell, the initial U.S. release wasin November, 1981. DM made their ALBUM debut with S&S. Their first commercial hit single was "Dreaming of Me". Their first U.K. chart success was "New Life" and their first U.S. "underground" hit was " Just Can't Get Enough".

DM formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex where Fletcher, M. Gore and Vince Clark attended school. After some time together they did away with their Guitar sound, recruited Gahan and became an all electronic band (this would explain the heavy guitar riffs since "Violator").

I do enjoy the existance of DM since my first hearing this album (vinyl LP) back in the early 80's.

I sort of lost track after "Violator" but picked them back up in 2001 enjoying "Ultra" and "Exciter".

DM will forever be on my top 10 list of enjoyable, brilliant musical artists.
