Are you, by any chance, talking about James Frey's "A Million Little Pieces"? If so, the book is not "newly released," but came out in 2003. The controversy concerns the fact that for over two years, many readers were convinced that the book was a genuine memoir, whereas it was first pitched as a work of fiction -- and Frey has admitted that it is not factual:

Sorry about that mistake, I've just heard a lot about the book, but didn't know much about it and decided to look into it. Thanks for the information and great link, lanfranco.

James Frey's "A Million Little Pieces." I'm reading it now and it's great. Although, I don't know if you heard the controversy about it. Apparently, a lot of what is in the book was falsified or exaggerated. It is still worth reading, though.

Frey has stated that the book is primarially factual.
He has confessed, only after serious scrutiny and interrogation by OPRAH, that he did "create" some scenarios and characters. His "reasoning" was that he wanted to protect the innocent. But he also lied about himself and his experiences.
All-in-all this stink over the term "Memoir" was and is a great marketing ploy. Frey is laughing all the way to the bank!!!!!!
