In fact, a quick perusal of the several sites on Humpty Dumpty makes it clear that no one is certain whether he was based on an historical character at all. Richard III is just one theory. The term is said to have been 15th-century slang for a fat person or 17th-century slang for a short, clumsy person. The name was also used for a 17th-century cannon.
