I'm as happy as a sand boy! What on earth is a sand boy, and why would he be particularly happy?

Question #62740. Asked by davejacobs. (Feb 21 06 2:09 PM)

A sandboy, not surprisingly, sold sand, used for a variety of purposes. Why a sandboy should have had a reputation for remarkable jolliness, however, is anybody's guess, given the not-especially-rollicking nature of the profession. As this site suggests, the saying may once have been meant ironically:

what about a boy who was so happy to have been the junior chosen to carry the bucket of sand on to the rugby field for his hero could kick at goal - usually in front of thousands of spectators ?
