Recently, I have seen ice skaters perform to a famous piece of supposedly 18th-century music that was actually "reconstructed" from a mere fragment in 1945. It was also used in a film that raised the international profile of its director and lead actor, who has since become somewhat controversial. What is this piece, to whom is it usually attributed, who "reconstructed" it, and what was that film?

The piece generally known as Tomaso Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor is a reconstruction by Remo Giazotto of a fragment of a trio sonata which he discovered in a ruined library. It seems to have been used in a good many films: is the one you’re thinking of “Gallipoli,” directed by Peter weir and starring Mel Gibson?

It is. And a yay to you, TT!.
I realized after I posted the question that I should have added an "s" to "profile." I improperly implied that the director, Peter Weir, and the actor, Mel Gibson, were the same person.
