    Question #62777. LeakyPickle asks:

Before twisted by Hitler, the swastika was used as a religious symbol by various cultures. Has there been any determination as to why this symbol was used so widely? Also, was there a religion/culture identified as using it first?

The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years. (That even predates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh!) Artifacts such as pottery and coins from ancient Troy show that the swastika was a commonly used symbol as far back as 1000 BCE.

I'm not sure what religion had it first, but I know if you Google "Manji" that's what it is. Instead of the square shaped swatstika it was in more of a diamond shape.

It's called manji in Japanese and is a Buddhist symbol there, I guess it came to Japan along with Buddhism in the 6th century.

The earliest swastika-like symbols preserved appear on pottery dated from around 4000 BC, as part of the "Vinca script".
