In the United States we associate Foster's beer as Australian, Heineken as Dutch, etc., but are these drinks actually popular in their home countries, or due to local tastes do they prefer stuff we haven't even heard of?

In my experience, there is always a better local drink. For instance most australians would prefer a Castlemaine XXXX to Fosters.

Hmmm, I think only Queenslanders prefer XXXX, Hendo_w. In NSW, its Victoria Bitter...VB.
Nobody drinks Foster's in Australia...lol.
In The Netherlands, I believe, Grolsch is more popular.
Further to this, I think the best Aussie Beer is Cascade, from the oldest brewery in Australia, located in Tasmania. It has a thylacine on the label. A great beer!

Here in the UK, Fosters and XXXX and Heineken are brewed locally, with dire results. British brewed lager is total rubbish. (OK, I will admit to being a Real Ale drinker.) I used to be able to get Boags - the real thing, that is - and that wasn't bad as lagers go. Incidentally, some of the smaller UK brewers are now marketing Real Lager. Haven't tried it yet - it's got to be better than the (words deleted before editors could see them) stuff that the big brewers produce. Heineken is widely drunk in France, and seems to be brewed there as well. The Stella Artois there is nothing like the stuff brewed here (thank the gods!) either. I prefer Leffe, though. I would like to try Fosters and XXXX - the real stuff, that is.

Fascinating. So they do brew proper beer in the USA after all....

The import beer sold in America in mass quantities usualy has been "taiolored down" (Guiness for instance) to meet the non-discerning pallettes of American drinkers. Afterall Budweiser (urine water) is the #1 selling beer in American.
With this in mind, what sells here probably would not be the best a country could produce and therefore "REAL" beer drinkers (persons from other countries) would not imbibe such brews.
Just an opinion based on conversations with "REAL" beer drinkers.

I often wonder what drinkers of Budweiser would make of the real original Budweiser - from Budvar in the Czech Republic. We can get it here in the UK (where the American version is made under licence - which must make it twice as bad) but is it available over there in the USA? Or would the brewers of Bud get all legal about names and such?
