Does marijuana smoke have the same or similar carcinogen agents as tobacco smoke? In other words, if legalized in the United States, would the Surgeon General likely impose the same warning label on the packaging?

Question #62839. Asked by LeakyPickle. (Feb 24 06 8:23 AM)

I would imagine Leaky.....but I don't think there would "be any packaging"???

However I'm not sure how the U.S. would work it, but here in Canada it's not like you can go into a store and buy it like a pack of cigarettes!..."chuckle"

I think it would be just as it is now. How ever they get it would still be the same after legalizing.

Here in Canada, it's only legal at a "certain amount". Not sure exactly, as I don't use, buy etc. the stuff. But I do know there is a real bad problem with it in my town and the kids know to only carry a specific amount if they get caught with it so as to not be charged.

IT IS STUPID....BUT THAT'S CANADA FOR YA!! A REAL BUNCH OF WACKOOOOS!!....sometimes I am even embarrassed to admit I am from here!

    According to this site, yes.

Mind you, no-one who smokes it is going to believe this. It's all a conspiracy to take the fun out of life. What do all those scientists and doctors really know about things? Ah well, the UK parliament has got something right for once - banning all smoking in pubs, restaurants and so on from some time in 2007. Yayyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!

Yes, he would. The arguement to keep the fun in life is that it's tough to smoke 2 packs of marijuana a day. While some hazards are just from inhaling any smoke, others are compounded by quantity.

    Thanks for the info!
From what little I know about the chemical components of marijuana smoke, the respiratory repercussions of habitual smoking can be even worse than tobacco smoke.

"Habitual" is debatable, but as wood suggests, inhaling any smoke can be hazardous.

Not really for or against, since people will always abuse substances to one degree or another (legal or otherwise). Mainly interested in the hypothetical reaction if it were legalized and sold in the same fashion as cigarettes.

Smoke from the Cannabis plant has more tar and resinous compounds than the heaviest of cigarettes.

    So yes, more.

Smoking in restaurants, pubs etc, should be the choice of the license holder of said establishment. It is, in my opinion, not the Govt's ground to be trod upon. I despise cigarettes, and hate coming out of my favorite watering hole stinking like hell but I CHOOSE to go there.

I lived in Atlanta for 12 years and it has been law for a while. It is not good for business especially in pubs and clubs.

In addition, the fact that one holds in the smoke from a marijuana cigarette for a much longer period of time in their lungs, it causes the tar, nicotine and carcinogens to be stronger. You also have no filters whatsoever. (but who would want them since one takes as much of the toke in as possible and holds it for the fullest effect?)

Yes- I'm sure it would be labeled horribly. I mean, seriously, we have to label silicon packets with "Do Not Eat",so why not label marijuana? For instance- do cigarettes need to provide cancer warnings? It's like saying that eating lard may make you fat; legally it has to be said.
