Rosa Parks (1913-2005), a Montgomery, Alabama seamstress, sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, when she refused to give up her bus seat to white passengers and move to the back. I think, in addition, she was an important symbol that encouraged Blacks to protest against and not to accept the Jim Crowe segregation laws and also gave a clear example to Whites how stupid and unfair these laws were and made many of them more opposed to segregation.
