Why was the octagon chosen for stop signs?

According to this site http://www.e-reiss.com/Articles/Happy%20Birthday%20Stop%20Sign!.aspx because there are fewer stop signs than other types of sign, and octagons required more material than other types. Thus, making the smallest group of signs octagons saved the most money. The sign developers wanted a different shape for each sign to make them distinct. Feb 25 06, 12:05 PM

This is a very interesting question. Thanks for asking. I also discovered that "making the smallest group of signs, octagons saved the most money." So basically, the 8 sided polygon was chosen due to economical reasons. Feb 25 06, 10:58 PM
