From what I understand, The Yardbirds started becoming more "pop" oriented, and Clapton wasn't pleased with it. Jimmy Page replaced him later.

Slight correction to that...Jimmy Page entered the picture after Jeff Beck. Page retained the rights to the name in the end. In recruiting members for a new band. That new group was first known as the New Yardbirsd...and then Led Zeppelin (thanks to Keith Moon's tongue-in-cheek comment about page's new band).

Clapton went on to the Bluesbreakers, and then formed Cream. Peter Green replaced Clapton in the Bluesbreakers and then left and formed Fleetwood Mac. Yes, it is the same Fleetwood Mac that you know today, but back then it was Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Danny Kirwin and Jeremy Spencer, and they were a hardcore Blues outfit.

Simple, Clapton left. According to him, he left to pursue the Blues seriously.
