This Danish drink is taken in between courses of a rich meal, but I want to know: What is this drink, what is it distilled from, and which famous author had a penchant for it?

Well, I reckon you're talking about Akvavit 'Water of life' which is said to aid in the digestion of foods. It's distilled from potatos, or grains.

I'll look for the famous author..

Good luck - I got the akvavit (also spelled aquavit in some sources) but darned if I can find the author. Originally distilled from grain, but often from potato now, and flavoured with caraway.
