What form of medication gets the medication to your system faster, liquid form or pill form?

Question #63268. Asked by pjotr. (Mar 09 06 1:32 AM)

Liquids get into the blood qiocker as they are already in a liquid form when they reach the stomach and are absorbed, whereas pills need to dissolve in the stomach and are then absorbed into the bloodstream.

Depends on the medicine. Some are more effective when absorbed in different parts of the body than others are. Some of those little colour coded capsules are designed to dissolve only in certain parts of the system, for example, one type might dissolve in the stomach, while another might pass through the stomach and dissolve further down the gut. Some pills are coated to do this to - if the label says Do Not Chew or Do Not Crush there's a good reason for this. Never open capsules before taking (OK, you can't do it afterwards but you know what I mean!) as there might be merely a nasty taste, but there might be a total loss of effectiveness when the stuff doesn't get to the right place. Liquids tend to only work in the stomach - and quite often taste nasty so are not taken when the doctor thinks you are taking them - so are not suitable for all medications.

Liquids are absorbed more quickly than solids because liquids do not need to be broken down.

As for effectiveness, as Baloo wrote, some medicines are designed to be absorbed over time so the structure of the dose is complicated.

You may notice a familiar drug that has 'improved' and the letters 'ER' are added to the name. This 'ER' means 'extended release'. No real improvement, just the addition of buffers to curtail absorption.

There is a third way of taking medication, very popular in France, by suppository (anally). This is absorbed very quickly into the gut and bypasses the stomach entirely. I would expect some medications broken down by the saliva and stomach acid would be more effective that way as well, but I wouldn't want to take a pill in a meeting there...
