How is former astronaut Wally Schirra's last name pronounced?

Question #63297. Asked by jayleighjess. (Mar 09 06 7:58 PM)

    McGruff

I've always heard it pronounced Sure-rah, with the accent on the second syllable.

She Raah is how I have always heard it pronounced.

    Not like Sherah

Sherah (sh¨¥¡ä ra), in the Bible, daughter of Ephraim. She built Beth-horon and the unidentified Uzzen-sheerah.

but She Raah with an upward inflection on the last syllable. Not unlike the exclaimation of surprise 'Ah-Ha'

Good. That's what I always thought, but I started questioning it when one of my professors told me it was SHEE-rah. It's nice to know I hadn't completely lost my mind. :)
