One of the greatest West African musicians, Ali Farka Touré, died recently. Why did he go by the name of Farka, which means donkey?

    Question #63359. Asked by Baloo55th. (Mar 11 06 9:26 AM)

He was given the name as he was the tenth child born to his parents, but the first to survive beyond childhood. Farka, meaning donkey, is a symbol of physical strength and endurance.

A rather sad Yay! for Maggie. A great loss. After the deaths of nine older brothers, his parents decided to give the tenth a name to make him unattractive to the spirits and nicknamed him Farka. It obviously worked. Another sad loss on the same day was that of Ivor Cutler. I think both of them would have been rather tickled that they had obituaries in The Times, The Guardian and the Telegraph...

A folkloric romance involving star-crossed lovers (who, in one old version, might have been a shepherd and a shepherdess) passed from one culture to another and is said to have been based on a true story in which the male lover became a significant poet. In the West, however, if the story is known at all, it is as the inspiration for a famed song composed by one of Rock's greatest musicians when he was in love with another man's wife. What is this romance, and what is that song?
