In the famous painting, why isn't the Mona Lisa wearing a wedding ring?

While it is true that the identity of Mona Lisa is uncertain, recently-discovered documentary evidence strongly suggests that Lisa del Gioconda was, indeed, the sitter -- and she was certainly married. In addition, recent speculation, based on additional documents and known dates, is that she was pregnant when the painting was begun. This theory has been advanced by, among others, American writer/physician Sherwin Nuland and British art historian Martin Kemp, who specializes not only in Leonardo but also in the relationship of art and science. So one idea that has been advanced is that she is not wearing a ring because her fingers were swollen with pregnancy.
