Over forty years ago, a British woman being questioned during a nationally-riveting legal proceeding made a famous and later oft-paraphrased remark when told that someone had denied one of her claims. What was that legal proceeding all about, who was the woman, and what did she say?

My apologies; premature clicking. It happens to old guys.
"While giving evidence at the trial of Stephen Ward, Rice-Davies made the quip for which she is most remembered and which is frequently used by politicians in Britain[1]. When the prosecuting counsel pointed out that Lord Astor denied having an affair or having even met her, she replied, "Well, he would, wouldn't he?". She traded on the notoriety the trial brought her, married an Israeli businessman and went on to open a string of successful nightclubs and restaurants in Tel Aviv, Israel. The restaurants and nightclubs bore her name. They were called; "Mandy's", "Mandy's Candies" and "Mandy's Singing Bamboo"."

"Mandy's Singing Bamboo" rather fires the imagination.
Not to worry, robboy, I knew exactly what you meant. (But do take your "old-guy" medication. We're waiting for those memoirs.) I have to divide the yay between you and solarbears, however, since solar provided the all-important Profumo Affair reference.
And just so everyone's clear on this, Mandy's famous line was delivered in response to Lord Astor's insistence that he'd never met her. Bridget Fonda did a nice job with it in "Scandal."

Oh, I think everyone's crystal now, as the Lord Astor reference is in my quote. Proud to share with anyone, though.
