A provisional yay? I'll take it. You're right, it was more than a pony and racism, or at least the possibility of it (I haven't read the book) is a major issue. A reference: Michiko Kakutani's rather critical Jan. 10 review in the New York Times.

Yes. Kakutani called the book "serviceable but sluggish," though Terence Rafferty's assessment in the NYT Book Review (January 15) was considerably more positive. So far, I'm enjoying it.
