What was the lowest-seeded team ever to beat a number one seed in the men's NCAA basketball tournament?

Question #63718. Asked by GoodVibe. (Mar 20 06 8:05 AM)

    LSU (#11) beat Kentucky (#1), 1986.

In what has to qualify as one of the greatest upsets of the modern tourney era, LSU upended top-seeded Kentucky 59-57 to become the only 11 seed to reach the Final Four. What did LSU have that the other two 11 seeds didn't (not that you'd ever pick an 11 seed to advance this far)? They were the only one of the three from a Big Six conference.

Not sure this really answers the question, but here goes.

In 1970 my hometown JU Dolphins astounded the NCAA by coming from nowhere and whupping Kentucky on the way to the final, where they lost to John Wooden's Bruins. As this article says, "They said it was the day Jacksonville stood still.”

My dad and my grandfather sharply differed on their esteem for Coach Joe Williams. They knew his brother very well; Grampa admired their aggressiveness and Dad didn't. All I know is the tournament was unforgettably exciting. The students burned their yearbooks in a bonfire later that year because they didn't think the huge portion of it dedicated to the basketball team in general and to star Artis Gilmore, whose 7'2" picture took up several pages, sideways, was enough.
