This article says a store in Britain has been using a high-pitched sound that only people under 20 can hear, but older people cannot, to keep teenagers away. Is this true?

    Question #63903. Asked by pjotr.

An article on this subject was published in our local (U.S.) paper about four months ago, picked up from a U.K. site. I don't know whether it's true, but I did find several sites online:

I've heard of this too - possibly in New Scientist as I don't read the national papers. I'd be interested to find out if I could hear it - having avoided discos all my life I have very little hearing loss.

A common rule of thumb used to describe human hearing is that human hearing is sensitive in the range of frequency of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, THOUGH THIS VARIES SIGNIFICANTLY WITH AGE, occupational hearing damage, and gender; some individuals are able to hear up to 22 kHz and perhaps beyond, while others are limited to about 16 kHz. Frequencies capable of being heard by humans are called audio or referred to as sonic. Frequencies higher than audio are referred to as ultrasonic, while frequencies below audio are referred to as infrasonic.

As one ages, their sound spectrum decreases.

All things considered, this ploy or filtration device is feasible and more than likely true.

It could upset the bats if there are any around where it's used. And that might put a stop to it. Mind you, i don't think there are usually many bats around where teens hang out.

It's just down the road from where I work, and I heard from the locals that it worked very well. Shame it has been stopped as it was a harmless way of dispersing the idiots that hung around outside the shop. And you're right about there not being too many bats there, Baloo.
