Sometimes the roots are combined with coffee. Other times it's grilled, or simply eaten fresh from the garden. 2000 years ago a famous botanist wrote about it, and its colour is maintained by immersion in water accompanied by an absence of light. What is it, and what did the botanist claim it cured?

I wonder whether this is radicchio, a type of leaf chicory (chicories being famous for their use with coffee). Pliny the Elder claimed it could be used as a blood purifier and to help one sleep. I've never tried it for insomnia, but I do like it both grilled and fresh.

    You wondered correctly Frankie.
Radicchio was the one, and personally I love to saute it with pancetta, walnuts and garlic as a base for my stuffing of involtini.
