Does "the jig is up" refer to the dance of the same name?

Question #63979. Asked by tjoebigham. (Mar 27 06 11:02 AM)

No. When someone says the "jig" is up, it indicates that a scoundrel has been found out, and the forces of law and order are on their way.

I'm thinking the questioner was asking for the origin of the phrase rather than its meaning.
According to Brewer, who gives both,
The Jig is Up: Your trickery is discovered. Jig was old slang for a joke or trick.
