Where does the expression "Don't rub it in" come from?

The belief, dating back at least as far as Cicero was that no wound could heal unless it was re-opened and cleaned, cleaning with salt was found to be effective but at the cost of considerable pain! Over the years the connection with healing has been lost and now just refers to a request not to increase any pain/discomfort by 'Rubbing It In!.
