Why do some people say smoking calms them down when it really speeds their heart rate up?

Likely because of the addiction to the nicotine. Depending on how often a person smokes, a smoker can go thru withdraw symptoms to an extent, until the nicotine is introduced again. Some who don't smoke as heavily (and whose addiction to nicotine isn't as strong) may simply enjoy it for the "pacifying" effect. Mar 30 06, 3:06 PM

As Pickle states it is not the cigarette that is calming really, it is the settling of the nicotine craving that is "calming". Had one never become addicted to the cigarette induced nicotine "high", one would never need to "calm" the craving. Viscious little cycle! Nicotene addiction makes people very nervous untill they get their fix through smoking a cigarette, so yes the smoking does calm people down but its the smoking that gets them nervous in the first place. Mar 30 06, 5:31 PM
