They were once named after a species of bird, a man whose name resembles a dairy product, and now after an army colonel. There is a monument erected in honour of them, whereby the inscription tells a tale of the consequences of a gusty wind. What are they, and where is this monument?

I think we might be on to Monty Python's Flying Circus, maybe? John Cleese's real name was John Cheese, Monty Python was an army colonel, and while I can't find any reference to the birds (maybe the Norwegian Blues?), I know for a fact they have a monument made to them. And just to show how sad I am -
From Monty's famous Hungarian Phrasebook routine
"A légpárnás hajóm tele van angolnával" - My hovercraft is full of eels. :D

Interesting train of thought there Flynny, but nope.
This is a common item that probably every household would contain some sort of variety. Even a well known phrase talks about making one particular profession defunct by its daily usuage.
Gee, I'm generous today.
