Did Germany and Japan have any relations in World War II or were their empires co-incidences?

However, there was very little practical co-operation between Germany and Japan in WWII. In particular, in 1940-41 the Nazi régime tried to persuade Japan to attack the Soviet Union in the Far East, but the Japanese military wanted "the jackpot or nothing", in much the same way as Hitler did with his desire for "Weltmacht oder Untergang". Moreover, both were in deadly earnest about it.
