Why do fish die belly-upward and float to the surface?

Because they have an air bladder inside them which is low in the gut. When they die it is usually quite full of air and so it makes the fish float upside down.

Gases from decomposition collecting in their body cavity makes that part the lightest. Therefore float the highest in the water
