This Sunday, an annual explosion will take place in the center of a storied city somewhere in Europe. What is this ritual, how did it supposedly begin, and with what distinguished and notorious family was it long associated?

Could this possibly be 'Rouketopolemos'? The rocket war of fireworks between two rival parishes - Saint Mark and Panagia Erithiani, on the Isle of Chios, Greece. The origins are unclear but connections to the Ottoman Empire are surmised.

Actually hang on, what am I thinking?! What about the Florentine Easter Explosion of the Cart?

Very interesting answer, but not what I had in mind. Though I'm talking, of course, about an Easter event.

Think about a place -- a famed place -- in a country somewhat closer to your heart.

This nice Scandinavian city, dating back to the 15th Century at least, has had a lot of trouble with fire but never more so than with a certain annual and seasonal decoration that was supposedly inspired by ancient tradition. Officials this year are convinced that they've outsmarted the vandals with a special treatment, but others aren't so sure. What is this city, about what Yule tradition are the city fathers so concerned, and can you provide a picture of it?

The title is extinct, but it was once associated with a prominent family in a certain U.S. state and gave its name to that state's best-known city. It also appears in the name of a novel by a man who is considerably more famous for another book; and, in turn, the novel supposedly gave its name to a rich dessert. What is it, who was that writer, and what was the surname of the prominent family?

The first official staging of this colorful celebration took place in a year and a city of great patriotic significance in the U.S., and it is still among that city's most famous holiday traditions. Much influenced by customs borrowed from the U.K. and Scandinavia, the event has often been compared with another that takes place later in the year in another U.S. urban center. What is it?
