This Sunday, an annual explosion will take place in the center of a storied city somewhere in Europe. What is this ritual, how did it supposedly begin, and with what distinguished and notorious family was it long associated?

Could this possibly be 'Rouketopolemos'? The rocket war of fireworks between two rival parishes - Saint Mark and Panagia Erithiani, on the Isle of Chios, Greece. The origins are unclear but connections to the Ottoman Empire are surmised.

Actually hang on, what am I thinking?! What about the Florentine Easter Explosion of the Cart?

Very interesting answer, but not what I had in mind. Though I'm talking, of course, about an Easter event.
Think about a place -- a famed place -- in a country somewhat closer to your heart.
