Nashville, Tennesse. Dickinson fired first and that bullet broke two of Jackson's ribs and was lodged in his chest, two inches from his heart. It could never be removed and caused Jackson considerable pain for the rest of his life with the side affect of coughing up blood on occasion. The rules of dueling state that both men shoot at the signal but the man who got the first shot does not get a second round until the other man gets a shot so Dickinson was bound by dueling codes to stand at the mark as Jackson got his shot. The shot killed Dickinson.
