In old "silent" films, if they were able to record and play music, then why couldn't they play people talking?

The music was separate from the film, at first played live by with a piano or other instruments in synchronization with the film. Through a series of inventions, the process of marrying sound and film evolved from that live version to Edison's synchronized disc recordings, to the actual film and sound appearing on the movie film.
