Which artist or group had to wait the longest to have their first number one hit? In other words, what is the longest gap between a group's first Top 40 hit and the first number one?

Could be Aerosmith.

For the umpteenth time, I must point out that "number one" is meaningless unless you specify which country's chart you are talking about.
Here in the UK, I gather Jackie Wilson had his first hit "Reet Petite" in 1957 and eventually topped the UK charts in 1986 with a re-issue of "Reet Petite" some 29 years later.
Still, if Aerosmith have their first UK number one in 2016 or later, they could still break that record...

On the plus side, Goodvibe, at least you say what country you are from in your blurb.
Some go on about "number ones" without even that much to go on.

Well here in the UK, Aerosmith failed to scrape the top 75 until 1987.
