For the umpteenth time, I must point out that "number one" is meaningless unless you specify which country's chart you are talking about. Here in the UK, I gather Jackie Wilson had his first hit "Reet Petite" in 1957 and eventually topped the UK charts in 1986 with a re-issue of "Reet Petite" some 29 years later.
