I could read this a couple different ways as the questioner doesn't say for a season, or all-time. Which could mean AS OF '62 the Athletics held the record for most games lost in MLB history, and in fact still do today. Interestingly, the Mets did lose the most for that season, eclipsed only by the miserable 134 game losses by Cleveland in 1899.
