Huang Di, legendary first emperor of the Chinese and ancestor of the Han and whose reign is said to have taken place from 2698 to 2599 BCE, is called in English the "Yellow Emperor." Yellow therefore became the official color of Chinese emperors. Huang Di is traditionally credited with the invention of the Chinese calendar and of the compass.
