Can DNA evidence alone identify the race, ethnicity, and traits of an individual, or do they need a suspect first to determine whether the DNA matches?

I thought I heard somewhere you can trace your ethnicity using DNA. A lot of African-Americans are doing this to "reconnect" with their roots.

If one has a positive sample with a known "owner" of the DNA, certain historic traits can be found.

    question

Submitted by Kuma, a college student from Louisville, Kentucky.

Can DNA reveal race? Is there a genetic profile for a Scottish person as opposed to a Nigerian as opposed to a Native American? And if there is, could a Native American person give a scientist a DNA sample and that scientist use that sample to determine that person's tribal heritage? Is it theoretically possible? Please answer.

    answer

    Provided by Doris Brown.

Currently, it isn't possible to determine race from DNA. Although many phenotypic traits have been identified and seem to be linked to certain families or populations with common ancestors, the genes for most of these traits have yet to be identified or mapped at the DNA level.
