This mysterious organization, associated with a certain flower and a religious symbol, supposedly began in the 15th century and experienced a resurgence in the 17th. Some scholars suspect it was originally a hoax, but it's said to be connected with Gnosticism, Egyptian mysteries, alchemy, Islam, and Freemasonry, as well as Christianity, and has spawned various modern incarnations. What is this hermetic order?

Sounds very Rosicrucian to me, but alas, I'm late for a meeting with a Rep so I'm going to have to let someone else expand further on this one..

It is the Rosicrucians, indeed, and peasy gets the yay -- though thanks to you, too, Maggie, for the reference site.
The Rosicrucian "literature" first appears in the early 17th century -- supposedly based on the work and experiences of the 15th-century "Christian Rosenkreuz." Fans of the wildly popular publication that my art-historian colleagues and I simply call "That d****d book!" will probably be aware that the Rosicrucians have been connected with certain other orders mentioned by the author.

ROSICRUCIAN: Sound familiar?..........DaVinci Code. The Reds Cross. Barbara Bush. Knights of the Templar. The Crusades. Murder Mayhem in the name of GOD. The supplier of the Blood of our Age. AIDS spreader.
All the pieces fit. It is up to you to put them together.
