Is the red to green time ratio on standard red/amber/green traffic lights a built in feature, is it programmed at source or is it controlled externally? Or does this vary considerably from light to light?

Question #64846. Asked by gmackematix. (Apr 20 06 7:24 PM)

It is supposed to be calibrated to the given speed limit of said roadway.

I know of persons who have beaten "red light" tickets because the delay between yellow and red was too short for the properr deceleration rate of a given roadway.

As you may have imagined, much of what you never wanted to know about traffic lights is here, including how, in one Irish area, they insisted the green light went above the red:

The answer to my question is found in the "Control and Coordination" section.
I suspect that here in Shropshire they still run on ye olde timer-based system.
