According to the Social Security applications in 2004, the most common female name for babies was Emily, followed by Emma, Madison, Olivia, and Hannah.
For males, Jacob was the most common, followed by Michael, Joshua, Matthew, and Ethan.
Note that this is only for babies--it does not include kids or adults.

I read not too long ago that by the year 2040, the most common name among middle-aged U.S. women will be "Emily." I believe it's true, because since 1981, about 1 out of 3 female babies born to my friends and relatives have been given this name. There are two in my husband's family alone, born within a year of one another.
So, if you're thinking about naming your daughter "Emily," think twice. Do you really want your child to be one of three or four or five Emilies in her class or office?

I have to agree with brodwaygirl. The most popular boy name in 2007 was Jacob, and Emily for girls. Some of the most unique were Trystan and Zaniya.
