Do female cats "spray" to mark their territory?

yes they can, but not usually as strong smelling as the boys "spray" is. Boys are also more prone to doing it if they have thier testicles. Spay or nueter your pet and it will help a lot!! :)

Spraying is a common component of cat behavior during the mating season with males and females
"communicating" their availability via their chemical markers. They both also spray to mark territories.

My little female cat certainly tries. She backs up against something, lifts her tail, wiggles her bum and - nothing. My male cat on the other hand pees on things, even though he's neutered (so's she). He does it more when he's stressed out (like when "She Who Must Be Obeyed" takes a swipe at him because it's raining, or the dog has been bothering her, or she didn't get as many cat treats as she thought she deserved).

The rest of the story:
Hello. I have two cats. A female about 12 years old. A male three years old. When the three year old came into the home, I did notice a problem with the female marking different areas. It wasn't too bad at the time. But now it has got to the point that both cats are doing it everywhere in the home and outside also. They spray in all different areas. In the garage, as soon as I open the door, whatever cat is around will right away run in and spray. Both have been fixed. They do not use a litter box, they are indoor and outdoor cats. Can you give me any advice? Thank you.

I would have to say yes although I have never had a problem with this. Personally I would not accept this behaviour. I would remedy it what ever the mode.

Worse than that. If another cat comes in the house or even looks like they will and it's not one she knows, Lucy will leave a pile or two in the area to make sure no one goes near it. Otherwise she never tries but that has happened a number of times when new cats arrived in the area.
