To what does Dorian Lydian Phyrgian and Mixolydian refer?

They are all the different musical scale variations. Some are more popular on different continents, and some were from before they managed to work out the most popular C scale.

All of the modes mentioned here were used by the ancient Greeks. Mostly they refer to different local tastes and local modes. Much of what we could have known about Greek music was lost due to the totalitarianism of the early Catholic Church (which suppressed much of Greek music as a sin).
Incidentally, the "Gittit", "Sh'minit" and "Sh'ginah" mentioned in some of the Psalms (among other texts) were also ancient musical modes.
