Other sources such as Wiki differentiate between the two stating that The Crawl is the style (stroke) used in swimming and the freestyle is the competition itself. Since The Crawl is the most common stroke used in freestyle...the two have become interchangeable in some circles.

From the FINA rules, in freestyle the swimmer may swim any style, so technically a swimmer could swim butterfly, breaststroke or backstroke in the freestyle competition (except in medleys or medley relays). The 'crawl' is the predominant stroke used in freestyle

Front crawl is the fastest swimming style known. It is one of two long axis strokes, the other being backstroke. Unlike backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke, the front crawl is not regulated by FINA, but it is nearly universally swum in freestyle competitions.
