    Why do/did firehouses have spiral stairs?

    		Perhaps this has something to do with keeping livestock from climbing the stairs. I understand that cattle will climb normal stairs, but cannot/will not descend. Horses may have similar issues. Spiral stairs would keep them from climbing up and having to be lowered. I assume that firehouses used horses to pull the water tanks before automobiles were invented.

    		NICE JOB cubby96! The reason firehouses have circular stairways is from the days when the engines were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up straight staircases.
