    If antibiotics kill bacteria and sulfonamides don't, why aren't antibiotics always perscribed?

    Because Sulfa drugs are bacteriostatic little devils...

    Firstly, sulfonamides are antibiotics. They inhibit the multiplication of bacteria. Bacteria are susceptible or restistant to an antibiotic. Some people are allergic to the penicillin family and may be prescribed a sulphar drug instead. It all comes down to:

    1)the organism
    2)what's going to kill the organism
    3)patient factors e.g. allergies/pregnancy/other medications etc.

    Allergies to Sulfa drugs are somewhat common. I know by personal experience. XP
