"Signs and Wonders: Little Richard in Australia, 1957"
In October 1957 Little Richard, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent performed a series of on-the-cheap rock'n'roll shows in Australia. Despite being only minimally promoted, the ‘Big Shows’ drew many tens of thousands of young people to various ramshackle halls and seedy boxing stadiums in Australian cities and towns. A week into the tour Sputnik 1, the first man made object in space, passed overhead. Certain that the end was nigh, Little Richard renounced rock'n'roll there and then, and a few days later threw his jewelry into the Hunter River north of Sydney. The incident was to be the first of a number of landmark ‘death of rock'n'roll’ moments.
