The first pre-recorded video tapes for home use were feature films offered for hire in the USA at $3 to $6 each by Sears Roebuck in the spring of 1972. They were for showing on the Avco Cartavision video player which retailed at $1600. This was an idea ahead of its time, and video rental did not catch on until the introduction of the VHS format in 1976. The following year André Blay, of the small Michigan-based company Magnetic Video, acquired the video rights to fifty movies owned by Fox and retailed them by mail order for $50 each. The titles, issued in both VHS and Beta formats, included “Patton,” “Hello Dolly,” “M*A*S*H,” “The Sound of Music” and “Beneath the Planet of the Apes.”
June 1994 – “Top Gun,” “The Crying Game,” “Indecent Proposal” and other titles were released internationally in DVD by Philips Media, using jointly developed Sony/Philips technology.
