In October 1960 at the U.N. General Assembly, Kruschev was infuriated at remarks by the Philipino delegate, Lorenzo Sumolong, who accused Russia of being a colonial power dominating the nations of Eastern Europe. He removed his shoe and banged it on the podium, calling Mr. Sumolong "a jerk, a stooge and a lackey of imperialism." He did the same thing later, during a speech by the U.S. Secretary of State, Francis Wilcox.
