Is the difference between a CD and a DVD just that a DVD can hold so much more stuff?

What do VCR, DVD, VHS, CD, CD-RW, and CD ROM stand for? Who invented DVD's and DVD players? What do the letters DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive mean in connection with computers? I have a movie that I want to put on a blank DVD, they are AVI files, it's in two files but it won't fit on it. Is there anyy way that I can compress 1 or 2 of the files so it can fit?
