This afternoon, in the middle of a busy city, I watched as two leaves of a bridge over a river were raised to allow three tall-masted boats to sail through to a lake. Who can tell me the technical term for this kind of bridge?

Sounds like a bascule bridge to me.

    Wow, almost simultaneous answers.

O.K., the yay must be split. Peasy gets half for the "bascule" answer, but zbeck gets the other half for the "double-leaf" term.

This event on the Michigan Avenue Bridge in Chicago this afternoon drew a huge and attentive crowd of natives and tourists. It was astonishing to see these enormous and towering bridge leaves rising slowly above the street and the traffic. The drivers and bus and taxi passengers held back behind the barriers were so fascinated that no one complained at all. Much fun.
